Roel Schouwenberg is a senior antivirus researcher at Kaspersky Lab, the Moscow-based antivirus company that has grown into the fourth-largest in the business. Kaspersky, which entered the U.S. market in 2005, protects 250 million users from cyber threats. It has to analyze tens of thousands of files each day to figure out if they’re variants of known computer viruses.

To help with the process, it started using Nvidia’s CUDA programming environment and its graphics chips to assist in the filtering. Schouwenberg said the company was able to improve virus processing 360-fold. We caught up with him yesterday in San Francisco at Nvidia’s CUDA day event to find out about the scanning process as well as the latest malware problems.
