Group texting startup Gogii raises $8.2M more

Gogii, which created the the textPlus mobile application for group chatting, has raised $8.2 million in a second round of institutional funding. The company was already backed by top tier venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Matrix Partners led the new round.
Using your phone’s SMS text messaging features, textPlus (iTunes link) creates a chat room-like experience on the iPhone or iPod Touch — that means your SMS conversations no longer have to be one-on-one. And even if your friends don’t have the application or the right device, they can still participate in the conversation by sending regular text messages. Gogii recently made it easier for folks without the application to start conversations, by allowing users to create a “text address” where anyone can send textPlus messages.
The Marina del Rey, Calif. company says its app has been downloaded 3 million times, and has been used to send 300 million messages since June. The app is ad-supported and free — if you’re using the downloaded app, you don’t even have to pay SMS fees. Competitors include Tatango and 3jam.
Gogii has now raised a total of $13.2 million. Kleiner participated in this round.

The “personal assistant” label gets attached to a lot of websites and applications, but it’s always an exaggeration. Usually the service in question can only tackle a small slice of what a human assistant would do, such as organizing your emails. Plus, you can’t just tell the app what you want, you have to learn [...]
