Government Sets Alarm On Intensifying Sea Level off India coast
Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, said that there has been a frightening increase in sea level alongside the Indian coast since 2004.
Nayak while addressing the Indian Science Congress session on ‘Weather, Climate and Environment,’ said that seal-level increase during 2004-08 along the Indian coast was about 9 mm. The worldwide usual sea-level increase from 1961 to 2003 was 1.8 mm per year. The yearly pace along the Indian coast has been faster from 1993 to 2003 and now has reached about 3.1mm a year.
He also mentioned that there has been an increase in the average temperature of global oceans which further has contributed to the sea-level increase. Though, the increase in sea waters can’t be accredited to global warming alone. He also said that the decrease in Mountain glaciers and snow covers in both the hemispheres also has contributed to the increasing sea level.
He also said that increase in sea level and temperature is relatively the same athwart all oceans. “Though, the question is that up to what levels will the sea? The increase of water is surging in nature. It can ebb and flow in a meticulous coast and the occurrence will not at all be consistent athwart all seas. The higher rise along the Indian coast was reported from the estuary of Hooghly River. The sea attrition at Lakshadweep islands can be attributed to rise in sea level, adding to it Nayak said that the pilot project to study the occurrence will be installed along the Chennai coast.
